Residential builders and trades across Australia continue to stay in high demand, according to data from residential construction management software\u00a0Buildxact.<\/p>\n

Buildxact’s\u00a0Residential Construction Activity Report (October \u2013 December 2020)<\/a>\u00a0found that nationally\u00a0the\u00a0industry finished the year in an extremely strong position with 2020 representing significant overall growth in the average demand for estimates from builders for the second consecutive year.<\/p>\n

Even\u00a0through\u00a0COVID-19,\u00a0confidence is high among home buyers and renovators, with low interest rates, personal savings at an all-time high and a range of government incentives\u00a0like\u00a0HomeBuilder\u00a0grant\u00a0helping to drive this trend.<\/p>\n

David Murray,\u00a0Buildxact CEO commented, \u201cThis\u00a0increased demand by home builders and renovators, has\u00a0placed\u00a0significant demand\u00a0on the supply of materials, impacting the component price.\u00a0Rather than absorb this cost in the margin of the jobs, the Builders are maintaining their margin levels and passing the increased material costs onto the customer.\u00a0In\u00a0Buildxact\u2019s\u00a0view, this is due to the fact there is such a large volume of working being quoted and\u00a0delivered\u201d.<\/p>\n

After an extremely busy first half of the year, Western Australia continued to record the nation\u2019s strongest growth in demand for estimates, becoming the only key state*\u00a0to see a significant increase in the average number of estimates per builder through Q4.<\/p>\n

In Queensland, 2020 was a strong overall year for new builds, with average number of December estimates per builder increasing 41% on 2019 levels.<\/p>\n

While the full impact of Victoria\u2019s prolonged COVID-19 lockdown restrictions is ongoing, demand for new builds remains high across the state. The average volume of estimates per contractor for all job types combined in Q4 was up 5% on Q4 2019.<\/p>\n

Murray went on to say, \u201cResidential custom home building and\u00a0renovations\u00a0has proved mostly\u00a0resilient\u00a0through the pandemic. Strong quote volume in Q4 2020, coupled with an improving economy should see this continue. Snap lockdowns, such as the one in Victoria that closed Construction, will have an impact on consumer confidence\u00a0if they occur regularly. In addition,\u00a0increased sales\u00a0have impacted\u00a0supply\u00a0constraints\u00a0which\u00a0may also provide some headwinds in housing construction.\u201d<\/p>\n
