In a city like Austin, where cranes fill the skyline and new neighborhoods continue to grow, it may seem surprising that homelessness remains one of our community’s most urgent challenges. But the truth is, homelessness is often not a result of a lack of effort or employment. More often, it’s the result of a lack of access to stable, affordable housing.
Across Central Texas, thousands of individuals and families experience homelessness each year. Rising housing costs, unexpected medical bills, job loss, or family crises can quickly push people into housing instability. In fact, many individuals’ experiencing homelessness report having some form of income or employment. What they lack is a safe place to call home.
That’s where the building industry has a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference.
HomeAid Austin was founded in 2018, and is the Charity of Choice for the Home Builders Association of Greater Austin with a simple but powerful mission: to build new lives for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness through construction, community engagement, and education.
HomeAid brings together builders, trade partners, suppliers, and nonprofit service providers to create housing solutions for people working to rebuild their lives. By leveraging in-kind donations of labor, materials, and professional expertise, HomeAid dramatically reduces construction costs for nonprofit organizations that provide housing and supportive services.
For builders, this partnership creates a powerful multiplier effect. The same skills and resources used to build homes across our region can also be used to build opportunity, dignity, and stability for people who need it most. HomeAid strengthens the social impact of builders.
Since its founding, HomeAid Austin has completed multiple construction projects across Central Texas, adding more than 29,000 square feet of housing and creating 37 beds for individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness. Through volunteer Care Days and essential item drives, the organization has also helped deliver over 900,000 essential items to nonprofit partners serving vulnerable populations.
These projects support organizations such as Mobile Loaves & Fishes’ Community First! Village, Magdalene House, Hope House, and other service providers who work every day to help individuals and families regain independence and stability.
For many in the building industry, partnering with HomeAid is a natural extension of the work they already do. Builders understand better than anyone that housing is the foundation of stability. When people have a safe place to live, they are better able to maintain employment, pursue education, care for their families, and rebuild their futures.
Homelessness is a complex challenge, but solutions become possible when industries, nonprofits, and community leaders work together.
At HomeAid Austin, we believe the building community is uniquely positioned to be part of the solution. Every project completed, every donated material, and every volunteer hour helps create new pathways out of homelessness for our neighbors in need.
If you’d like to be part of this work, there are many ways to get involved. You can support HomeAid Austin by making a donation through our website at www.homeaidaustin.org, or by joining us at one of our signature fundraising events. Our Annual Golf Tournament on May 11 and our HomeAid Austin Gala on October 22 bring together builders, industry partners, and community leaders who believe in building solutions to homelessness.
Together, we can continue using the power of the building industry to create homes, hope, and opportunity across Central Texas.
